The Chief and Rescue responded to assist Northmoreland Twp (Station 140) with a fatal structure fire on Route 292 on April 8th. Upon arrival, the Rescue was assigned RIT operations for the fire involving a two and a half story farmhouse that was well involved. Fireground operations were hampered by water supply, downed power lines, and the storage of multiple flammable liquids throughout the residence. Chief VanLuvender was given the assignment of Safety Officer upon his arrival. Crews also had to contend with a large brush fire that was started by embers from the burning home. Companies from Wyoming, Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties operated for more than 4 hours to bring the fire under control. This was the second working fire in less than a week for the Rescue company. On April 4th, the Rescue assisted Greenwood F.D. (Station 98) with a working fire at the McKinney Corp. on Davis St in Moosic. AFD Assists West Pittston with a Structure Fire... The Rescue Company responded to two structure fires at the same residence on the morning of March 3rd. The fire at 205 Fifth St, West Pittston occurred in a 2 1/2 story double-block residence. The first fire was reported shortly after midnight, and had companies from West Pittston, Exeter, and Avoca on the scene for more than 2 hours. This fire damaged the rear portion of the building. Initial reports indicated that there were multiple occupants trapped, but this report proved to be unfounded. The second fire was reported shortly after 7:30am, and this time, the building was a complete loss. Upon arrival of West Pittston Command, heavy fire was showing from all second floor windows and the roof area. Again, crews from West Pittston, Exeter and Avoca operated for more than 4 hours to bring the stubborn blaze under control. One side of the building was occupied at the time of the fires, the other side vacant. Both fires are currently under investigation by local authorities. Comedy Show a HUGE Success... Members of the F.D. would like to thank everyone who made the comedy show on March 2nd a HUGE success. The show was a sell out, with almost 140 in attendance. The department would like to thank everyone who attended as well as those who donated their time, energy and products that made this show such a great event. Plans are already underway to sponsor a second show later this year. About Us... The Avoca Emergency Services is comprised of two separate organizations. While the fire department and ambulance association remain as separate organizations, they have teamed up to co-own the Emergency Services building which is located on Main Street. The Avoca Fire Department relies on a fully volunteer membership to manage the organization and respond on all requested emergencies. The FD maintains a three pieces of apparatus, including a command vehicle, a KME 1250 G.P.M. pumper, and a E-One Protector series walk-in rescue. Last year, the FD responded to more than 300 emergency calls. The Avoca Ambulance Association relies on both volunteer and paid professionals to respond on emergencies. The association provides for paid daytime coverage (6am to 6pm) seven days a week, with volunteers covering the remaining hours. The ambulance association is the primary basic life support provider for the boroughs of Avoca and neighboring Dupont.
